Pet Obesity

Obesity is a common condition in pets that can put them at high risk for disease and other complications. Weight control is sometimes hard to maintain in pets because of different body sizes, amount of exercise and diet.

Certain conditions may contribute to obesity in pets. These conditions include:

  • Amount and type of food eaten
  • Level of exercise and activity
  • Spaying and neutering
  • Age
  • Breed
  • Environment
  • Medications

Overweight dogs are at a higher risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, decreased liver function, difficulty breathing and many other conditions. There is no sure way to prevent obesity, but maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle for your pet is the most effective measure you can take.
